How top-of-search PPC drove rankings and share of voice

Intent-first Sponsored Ads with disciplined Top-of-Search coverage improved relevance, rank, and SOV.

We led with Top-of-Search PPC—restructuring Sponsored Ads around high-intent queries and right-sizing Top-of-Search placement multipliers to win visibility where conversion is strongest. Budgets were reallocated from low-value placements to efficient ToS coverage, while negatives, match-type controls, and creative testing improved relevance. The result was higher click share and organic momentum on priority terms, with better ACOS/TACOS as spend concentrated where listings could win.

The Challenge

For a leading electronics manufacturer on Amazon, non-branded, category-defining keywords weren’t breaking into top organic positions—limiting discoverability and sales velocity. Paid investment was over-indexed to lower-impact placements (ROS/PDP), starving Top-of-Search where conversion and rank momentum are won. The result was slowing growth and rising efficiency pressure—signaling the need for a disciplined search strategy to rebalance spend, capture higher-intent traffic, and turn paid visibility into sustained organic lift.

  • 60%+ of ad spend sat in low-impact placements (ROS/PDP), under-investing in Top-of-Search where conversion is highest.

  • Growth had decelerated, putting the annual target at risk without a shift in search visibility and efficiency.

Strategic Approach

To restore momentum for the leading electronics manufacturer, we rebuilt Sponsored Ads around a rank-first discipline. The plan prioritized Top-of-Search coverage on core, non-branded terms—using exact-match control, calibrated placement multipliers, and smarter budget allocation—so paid wins would compound into organic lift.

  1. Architecture (Waterfall Bidding): Two tiers—aggressive bids to secure Top-of-Search on head terms, and lower bids to efficiently harvest volume across PDP/ROS without inflating CPCs.

  2. Keyword Strategy: Exact-match campaigns on category-defining, non-branded queries to protect precision; phrase/broad only where discovery was needed, with negatives to maintain traffic quality.

  3. Placement & Bidding Controls: Progressive TOS multipliers tuned to ROAS and CPC; deliberate underbids on ROS/PDP to keep coverage economical; dayparting to concentrate budget in high-conversion windows.

  4. Budget Rebalancing: Shifted spend out of low-impact placements into TOS share capture, with pacing guardrails to avoid overspend while holding position.

  5. Creative & Relevancy Hygiene: Iterative ad copy and headline testing aligned to priority keywords; ongoing search term pruning to reinforce relevancy and conversion.

  6. Measurement & Iteration: Weekly Share-of-Voice and rank tracking (paid + organic) on target terms; cohorting by keyword intent; bid/placement adjustments against predefined CPC and ROAS bands.

Results

  • Share of Voice: combined paid + organic SOV up.
  • Top-of-Search share: paid ToS share and click coverage increased.
  • Market reach: first-page query coverage expanded.
  • Organic lift: organic SOV and rankings rose on key terms.

Why it worked

  • Paid → organic flywheel: TOS wins increased qualified traffic and sales velocity, improving organic rank and compounding visibility.

  • Precision targeting: Exact match + waterfall bidding improved traffic quality and ROAS while preserving efficient scale.

  • Smarter budget allocation: Rebalanced spend from ROS/PDP to high-conversion TOS without losing lower-cost coverage.
